One thing I loved a lot about working with Russ was getting out of my songwriting habits. I'd tell him to come to practice with some piano parts that I could lay guitar stuff over, and I always emphasized that I wanted to do something "jazzy."
Now, I've never actually taken the time to learn music theory, let alone seriously practice the guitar, and everything that I do that is "jazzy" necessarily has to have air quotes around it. But playing with Russ like this was a way to pretend. I particularly like the guitar solo at the end, which feels really narrative compared to most of my others.
