This is one of the few songs Russ and I worked on where he didn't take the lead in lyrics and vocals. I wrote it for one of my perennial muses.
Russ told me he always really loved the way I strung out the "shoe" in "shoelace." I've also really loved the bass drop in this song at the end so much - it all just floats away on that.
Russ definitely influenced me to be more expressive, adventurous, and even silly with lyrics and singing style.
The lull in the middle was supposed to house a sax solo by Russ, but he didn't have a sax at the time, and we never circled back around to it. His keyboard part carries it well enough though!

lyrics
Ooh, girl,
I wanna slow dance
with you,
ooh my, my
so fly.
Wallflower,
higher power,
don't be blue
ooh why, why,
so sad?
Your lips
wanna be kissed
and I won't be left out of that!
My word,
my mind,
my soul:
out of control.
Gettin' closer
to what I been told.
Ooh babe,
don't be afraid;
all you have to do is sway
this way.
Oh my
lay-day.
Bonafide turnin' tide;
my shoelace is untied,
but I don't mind.
But your eyes are cool and clever!
This was your plan forever!
You knew I knew I could never
not catch a fallin' feather.
